Montana Listings

When growing montanas on fences and other places where you don't want a crow's nest, my recommendation for pruning is to cut back to 1 or 2 pairs of buds on the side shoot (not the main framework), after the Clematis has finished its main flowering. Prune in much the same way as grape vines. This will give you a strong framework and a nice plant. When they are pruned, give a good feed (compost, manure, or fertilizer). A little corrective snipping will be needed on the strongest growing ones, and lastly tie the vines to the support so they do not blow down.

This group is pruning group A (xA). Pruning is done after flowering (if any).
